Legendary Lessons

It has been three whole weeks since I have written. I feel like I let myself down a bit, but on the other hand, I feel like I have been living and have so much more to write about!
I'll start by saying that there are all kinds of people we look up to in our lifetimes. It may be a big brother, a teacher, a sports hero, or some humanitarian we admire. My parents have always advised not to get too wrapped up in idolatry of "famous people" as they are just like us with a lot more notoriety! Sometimes you just can't help it!
In early October our family was blessed to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday. Most of his grandchildren were able to make it to the celebration as well as all five of his children and his wife, our mom. Brothers and sisters in law and some nieces and nephews were present, too. It was truly a joy to hear him give thanks to everyone for being part of his life—to those who were present and those who have passed on as well. I read countless birthday wishes on Facebook from family, friends, and former students. In doing so I reaffirmed what I already knew... my dad is someone others look up to and not just in his family! That's one lesson I know he has shared with with us: how you conduct yourself in life should be taken seriously because you never know whose life you may be impacting. I know my dad would never say he set out to be a role model, but I am glad that he has been around for these eighty years to grace the lives of those who love him and respect him. I certainly do.
In late October Joel and I had the opportunity to see Wynonna Judd , a legend in her own right, in concert, and the very next week were blessed to enjoy Reba McEntire in concert one night and then Sir Elton John the next night! Two incredible legends—one in country music and the other in pop.
Reba McEntire is a strong female artist who wanted to be a champion barrel racer and her daddy told her to stick to what she did best—singing! I am glad she listened to him. She has been working on her career since 1975. Not only does she sing, but she acts, too! She also runs several businesses. I got to see her in concert for the first time in the early 90s. What I admired about her then (and still do) was her love for her son whom she had given birth to within that year, and she was working and doing the mom thing! I took that as a lesson for myself... moms can be great moms AND have a career, too. At least that is what I strived for. I am grateful for Reba modeling how to balance it all.
Sir Elton—the chaos trying to get downtown San Antonio that night (with five major events happening in our city) will certainly be something we will not soon forget.! It was awesome to be able to experience seeing him in concert as he brings his career to a close. He seems to have always blazed his own trail with how he lives his life and how he has produced incredible music for almost 50 years. From him I take the lesson of doing "your thing" and making time to focus on your family especially after a long career. I am grateful for his contribution to the world of music and so much more.
These individuals are legends in my eyes as they have impacted my life and the lives of so many others. A good lesson for all of us is: you may be a role model for others without even knowing it. Make sure you put your best foot forward!
